Hydration for cats is crucial to their overall health and well-being. Just like humans, cats need water to maintain their body's normal functioning. Adequate hydration is essential for various bodily processes, including digestion, circulation, and temperature regulation.

Let me introduce our water fountain for cats! And let us dive into the mesmerizing realm of feline hydration and discover the key to their purr-fect health!

Conventional Water Bowls VS. Water Fountain For Cats

Conventional Water Bowls and Cat Water Fountains serve the same purpose of providing water to cats, but they differ in design and functionality, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Water Bowls Facts

Conventional Water Bowls

  • Design: Conventional water bowls are simple, stationary containers made of materials such as plastic, ceramic, or stainless steel. They come in various sizes and shapes.
  • Appeal: Cats may not be naturally drawn to water bowls, especially if the water has been sitting for a while and has lost its freshness. Some cats might ignore the water bowl if it is placed too close to their food bowl, as they prefer separate areas for eating and drinking.
  • Freshness: The water in conventional bowls can become stale over time due to dust, fur, and food particles settling in the bowl. Regular cleaning and refilling are essential to maintain freshness.
  • Cost: Conventional water bowls are generally more affordable than cat water fountains.
  • Maintenance: They are easy to clean and require no power supply or installation.
  • Material: Options include BPA-free plastic, ceramic (fragile), and stainless steel (sturdy and easy to clean) bowls.

Water Fountain For Cats

  • Design: Cat water fountains are equipped with a motorized pump that circulates water through a filter, providing a continuous flow of fresh, aerated water. They come in various designs, including those with streams and bubblers.
  • Appeal: Running water is more appealing to many cats due to their natural preference for moving water. The sound and motion of the fountain can attract cats to drink more frequently.
  • Freshness: The constant circulation and aeration of water in the fountain keep it cool and fresh, making it enticing for cats to drink from.
  • Cost: Cat water fountains can be more expensive than conventional water bowls due to their added features and functionalities.
  • Maintenance: They require regular cleaning of the fountain and changing the filter.
  • Material: Cat water fountains are available in BPA-free plastic, ceramic (may be fragile), and stainless steel (durable and easy to clean) options.
  • Encourages Hydration: The flowing water can encourage cats to drink more, ensuring they stay properly hydrated, which is especially beneficial for cats that eat primarily dry food.

In summary, conventional water bowls are simple and cost-effective, but they may not always be as appealing to cats. On the other hand, cat water fountains provide a continuous flow of fresh water, which can encourage cats to drink more and maintain proper hydration.

The choice between the two depends on your cat's preferences, your budget, and the level of convenience you desire. Ultimately, both options can fulfill your cat's hydration needs, but a cat water fountain might be a more attractive and beneficial choice for cats that enjoy running water and need a little encouragement to drink more.

The Science Behind Water Fountain For Cats

Cats have a natural preference for running water, which can be attributed to their ancestral behavior and instinctual survival instincts. Understanding this behavior is essential for cat owners to provide a suitable water source that meets their feline friends' needs and promotes their health and well-being.

  • Ancestral Behavior: Cats have evolved from desert-dwelling animals, and in the wild, running water is often cleaner and safer to drink than stagnant water. This behavior is rooted in their evolutionary past, where running water was more likely to be fresh and free from contaminants.

  • Staying Hydrated: While cats' bodies are designed to get most of their water intake from the food they eat, many domestic cats are fed dry food, which lacks sufficient moisture content. As a result, cats may not consume enough water, making it crucial to encourage them to drink regularly. Running water can entice cats to drink more frequently, helping them stay properly hydrated and maintain their overall health.

  • Sensitive Whiskers: Cats have highly sensitive whiskers, and they may prefer drinking from a water source that doesn't cause discomfort by brushing against the sides of the container. Water fountains with large, open basins or a continuous stream of running water can provide a more comfortable drinking experience for cats, as it allows them to drink without whisker contact.

Cat Water Fountains’ Impact On Cats' Health:

  • Preventing Dehydration: Providing a constant source of running water encourages cats to drink more frequently, reducing the risk of dehydration and related health issues. Dehydration in cats can lead to urinary tract infections, kidney problems, and other health complications.

  • Promoting Kidney Health: Adequate hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining kidney health in cats. Running water fountains encourage cats to drink more water, which can help prevent kidney issues and promote kidney function.

  • Enhancing Hygiene: Running water fountains keep the water continuously moving, reducing the risk of bacteria and contaminants buildup compared to stagnant water in traditional bowls. This ensures that cats have access to clean and fresh water at all times.

"I love how water is always available in this battery operated water fountain!"

--Knoxvolgal from Amazon Reviews

I love how water is always available in this battery operated water fountain. I just purchased my second one. Both of my cats love water fountains. This is my first time purchasing a battery operated model. In other models requiring electricity, the water drains out of the basin when the power goes out. No worries about this model! The water remains in the basin at all times, and I have it set to sensor mode so that the fountain turns on when my cats approach. I change out the water weekly, but have no need to recheck the battery weekly. It’s been running on one charge for multiple weeks. I highly recommend this fountain!

"I would definably recommend this water fountain for picky cats like ours!"

--Nelson T. from Amazon Reviews

I really like this cordless electronic water fountain for our cat ( so you're not tied to a wall outlet or replacing batteries). It says the battery charge can last up to 30 days, I haven’t let it go that long before recharging it. I typically clean this once a week, so when I’m cleaning it I sometimes plug it in to recharge the battery. So it has never run down completely and it’s on the 15-minute run cycle. The motion sensor was too sensitive and would run all the time as someone walked by it. Overall it’s pretty simple to disassemble, but be aware you need to pull the pump straight up to take it off ( I struggled with it until I figured this out). The only drawback so far is when you clean it you have to replace this small sponge/filters. I noticed if I didn’t replace these filters my cat will stop drinking from it. So know up front there will be a reoccurring maintenance cost of purchasing replacement filters. I would definably recommend this water fountain for picky cats like ours.

"Easy to clean and replace the filters to make sure that the water is always fresh!"

--Jason C Schulze from Amazon Reviews

Highly recommend! Everybody in the family used this product right off the bat! This thing has charge life for days, actually months, depending upon which setting you use. The fact that there are no wires makes it the most useful product I’ve used recently. Up for the cats, down for the dog, and outside for everybody! Easy to clean and replace the filters to make sure that the water is always fresh.

More Tips About Cats’ Drinking Water

How To Train Your Cat To Use Water Fountain

So, your cat is giving you that skeptical stare, wondering what on earth this new contraption is. Don't worry; it's a common reaction.

Training your cat to use the UahPet Cat Water Fountain requires patience and a gentle approach. Place some of their favorite treats near the fountain to pique their interest. Gradually move the treats closer to the water's edge until they're comfortable drinking from the fountain. Positive reinforcement is the key!

To train your cat to use a cat water fountain, follow these steps:

  • Clean and Rinse the Water Fountain: Before introducing the water fountain to your cat, make sure it's clean and ready for use. Wash the bowl with soap and water, and thoroughly rinse the filter to remove any loose debris that could dirty the water.
  • Keep the Fountain Turned Off Initially: If your cat is cautious about the noise the fountain makes, keep it turned off until they are more comfortable with the new device. This will allow them to adjust to the presence of the fountain without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Allow Them to Investigate: If your cat seems hesitant to approach the fountain, let them investigate it at their own pace. You can encourage them by placing your hand or finger in the bowl and bringing it up to their lips, so they know there's water available in the fountain.
  • Keep the Fountain Away from Food and Litter Box: Cats prefer to have their food and water sources separated. Place the water fountain in a different room from the food bowl to respect your cat's natural instincts. Also, ensure the fountain is away from the litter box, as cats tend to avoid drinking near their restroom.
  • Create a Safe Environment: Cats have their favorite spaces within the house. Observe your cat's behavior to identify their preferred room or area and place the water fountain there. A familiar environment will make them more comfortable using the fountain.
  • Use Rewards: Don't force your cat to use the water fountain. Instead, be patient and offer incentives. Place treats near the fountain to encourage your cat to approach and explore the new water source. This positive reinforcement can help them associate the fountain with something enjoyable.
  • Adjust Water Flow: Some cats might be picky about the water flow in the fountain. If the fountain allows you to adjust the water flow, experiment with different options to find one that your cat prefers. Remember not to turn off the fountain too often, as it might disrupt their comfort with the running water.
  • Be Patient: Training your cat to use a water fountain may take time, and each cat's adjustment period can vary. Be patient and observe their progress. If you've tried all the steps and your cat still refuses to drink from the fountain, consider trying a different type of fountain that suits their preferences better.

Remember that some cats may need more time and encouragement to adapt to new changes in their environment. The key is to provide a safe, comfortable, and enticing environment around the water fountain to help your cat develop positive associations with it.

Other Hydration Strategies For Cats

Hydration is vital for a cat's overall health and well-being. While the UahPet Cat Water Fountain is an excellent choice, you can still complement it with other hydration strategies.

Here are some alternative methods to promote your cat's water consumption:

  • Multiple Water Bowls: Increase water availability by placing several water bowls in different areas of your home. This ensures that your cat can easily find water no matter where they are. Experiment with different bowl sizes and materials to discover your cat's preference.
  • Try Different Water Bowl Locations: Cats are sensitive to their environment and may avoid drinking water in certain areas. Experiment with different locations for water bowls to find a spot where your cat feels comfortable drinking from. Avoid placing water bowls near litter boxes or noisy appliances.
  • Wet Food and Moisture-Rich Diets: Consider feeding your cat wet food or moisture-rich diets. Canned cat food contains a significant amount of water, which can supplement their hydration. Talk to your veterinarian about incorporating wet food into their diet or transitioning to a primarily wet food diet.
  • Broth or Tuna Water: Enhance the appeal of water by adding a small amount of low-sodium chicken or beef broth to it. Another option is using tuna water drained from canned tuna packed in water (not oil). However, use these additives sparingly and check with your veterinarian to ensure they are safe for your cat.
  • Hydration through Food: You can increase your cat's water intake by feeding them water-rich foods, such as fresh fruits or vegetables that are safe for feline consumption. Foods like watermelon, cucumber, or even some soups can contribute to their hydration.
  • Add Water to Dry Food: If your cat prefers dry food, consider adding a small amount of water to it to increase their overall water intake. Gradually mix water into the kibble to create a wetter texture that might be more appealing to your cat.
  • Interactive Water Play: Some cats enjoy interactive play and may be intrigued by a slow-dripping water source. You can try using a slow-drip water bowl or a cat water dispenser that mimics a dripping faucet to entice your cat to drink more.

Remember that every cat is unique, and what works for one cat may not work for another. Be patient and try different strategies to find what best suits your cat's preferences and encourage them to drink more water. Adequate hydration is crucial for their well-being and can help prevent potential health issues in the future.

How Much Water Should My Cat Drink Per Day

Cats have specific hydration needs that are essential for their overall health and well-being. Water plays a crucial role in various vital bodily functions, including temperature regulation, maintenance of normal electrolyte concentrations, digestion, and delivery of nutrients to the organs. Adequate hydration is vital for proper vascular circulation, enabling the transport of essential substances like oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the feline's body.

To maintain a cat's hydration, it is important to ensure that they have access to clean and fresh water at all times. Cats should consume between 3.5 to 4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight daily. As obligate carnivores, cats naturally obtain some water from their prey, but since domesticated cats often rely on commercial diets, providing enough water through their water bowls is crucial. Wet cat food, which contains up to 80% water, can contribute significantly to a cat's hydration level, reducing the amount they may need to drink from their water bowl.

Dehydration can lead to various health problems in cats, such as decreased circulation, an inability to control body temperature, cardiac arrhythmias, and neurologic dysfunction. It is essential to recognize the signs of dehydration, which may include lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dry mucous membranes, sunken eyes, and constipation.

As cats age, they may develop certain health conditions that can affect their water consumption. For example, older cats with osteoarthritis may benefit from elevated water bowls to avoid straining their front legs while drinking. Additionally, introducing canned food early on can help kittens recognize it as food and increase their water intake since canned food typically contains a high water content (around 70-80%).

To prevent dehydration, pet owners should monitor their cat's water intake, especially during hot weather or when they are experiencing fluid loss due to vomiting or diarrhea. A simple skin test can help determine dehydration; gently grabbing loose skin and observing how quickly it returns to its normal position can indicate hydration levels. If dehydration is suspected, immediate veterinary assistance is crucial to rehydrate the cat intravenously.

At the end of 2022, we shared a touching story about Gramps on social media. Since then, we've received many positive reviews from pet parents who also adopted a pet with special needs.

Those true stories make us realize what we design and what our pet parents purchase are more than pet supplies. To some rescued pets and pets in need, they represent a helping hand, a sign of support, or the chance to live a good life.

That's why we launch this campaign at the beginning of 2023. For every purchase made at Uahpet, we will contribute $1 towards our donation efforts to support rescued pets. At the end of the month, we will calculate the total order numbers and donate products of equal value to that amount.
